01152010 目的格関係の of

一般に前置詞 of は「～の」で解釈し、それ以上は考えていない人が多いと思います。しかし構文が複雑な場合、あるいは of 前後の名詞に長い修飾語句が付く場合、非常に訳しにくくなります。そのようなときは、of の用法を考えてみましょう。それが下記に挙げる「目的格関係 (述部の名詞化表現)」であれば、「述部」のように訳すことで自然な日本語になります。下記に例を挙げましょう。


・Industry services include the design and creation of custom software, as well as ongoing maintenance and modification of custom software and training in the use of custom software.


◇the design and creation of custom software


→ to design and create custom software と同義で、design と creation の意味上の目的語が custom software。


◇ongoing maintenance and modification of custom software


→ to *ongoingly maintain and modify custom software と同義で、maintenance と modification の意味上の目的語が custom software。


[注]ここでは解釈上 ongoingly を使用していますが、ongoing の副詞形は非標準用法なので continuously で解釈してください。


◇the use of custom software


→to use custom software と同義で、use の意味上の目的語が custom software。
